Abstract

Listening is a fundamental skill in English language learning and plays a crucial role in the development of overall communicative competence. However, many language learners experience difficulties in understanding spoken English in real-life situations due to limited exposure to natural language input. This article examines the effectiveness of developing listening skills through the use of authentic materials in English Language Teaching (ELT). Authentic materials, such as news broadcasts, podcasts, interviews, films, and everyday conversations, provide learners with exposure to real language, natural pronunciation, and cultural context. The study highlights the advantages of authentic materials, including increased learner motivation, improved listening strategies, and enhanced cultural awareness. In addition, the article discusses potential challenges in using authentic materials and proposes practical teaching strategies, such as pre-listening, while-listening, and post-listening activities, to support learners at different proficiency levels. The findings suggest that integrating authentic materials into listening instruction significantly improves learners’ ability to comprehend spoken English and prepares them for real-world communication.
