Abstract

The rise of digital communication has profoundly impacted the use of formal and informal English, transforming the way language is employed in both personal and professional contexts. This article explores how platforms like text messaging, social media, and instant messaging have introduced new linguistic features, such as abbreviations, emojis, and non-standard punctuation, into everyday communication. It examines the role of these informal language elements in shaping modern communication, making it more efficient but also raising concerns about clarity and professionalism. The article also investigates the effects of digital communication on formal English, particularly in academic, business, and professional settings, where informal language is increasingly making its way into traditionally formal discourse. Furthermore, it discusses the challenges faced by language learners in adapting to the blending of formal and informal registers and the implications for language teaching and language use in the digital age. Through this analysis, the article sheds light on how digital communication is reshaping English and offers insights into the evolving relationship between formal and informal language in contemporary society.
