Polysemy and idiomatic expressions pose several difficulties for teachers and students in modern language instruction. Polysemy refers to the phenomenon in which a single word has multiple related meanings, whereas idiomatic expressions possess figurative meanings that cannot be comprehended word by word. These linguistic phenomena can make language learning more challenging and cause significant misunderstandings. This article outlines the challenges of teaching polysemy and idiomatic expressions, evaluates methods for explaining them, and proposes systematic ways to enhance the vocabulary and communicative competence of students.
