Independent thinking is widely regarded as one of the core competencies that modern primary education must cultivate, as it enables children to analyze information critically, make reasoned decisions, and adapt to a rapidly changing world[1]. This article examines the pedagogical foundations underlying the development of independent thinking skills in primary school students. Drawing on constructivist and student-centered learning theories, the paper explores instructional strategies, classroom conditions, and teacher practices that foster autonomous cognitive activity in young learners. The discussion also addresses common obstacles to fostering independence, such as rigid curricula and assessment systems that reward memorization over reasoning. The article concludes with practical recommendations for primary school teachers, education program designers, and policymakers in Uzbekistan and beyond.
[1]Independent thinking, in the pedagogical sense used throughout this article, refers to a learner's capacity to formulate judgments, solve problems, and evaluate information without relying entirely on external direction.
