READING BETWEEN THE LINES: USING LITERATURE TO BOOST ENGLISH LITERACY

This article explores the significant role of literature in enhancing English literacy, particularly in the context of language learners. It examines how literature, through its rich vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and thematic depth, fosters reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills. By analyzing various literary works, from classic English literature to renowned works in Uzbek, Russian, French, Italian, and Turkish traditions, the article illustrates the value of diverse literary texts in expanding language skills and cultural awareness. Literature not only provides contextual learning opportunities for vocabulary and grammar but also encourages students to engage deeply with language through interpretation, analysis, and creative expression. The article argues that incorporating literature into English language teaching enhances both cognitive and emotional development, offering students a dynamic and interactive approach to mastering English. Through this interdisciplinary approach, learners gain a more profound understanding of language, culture, and the human experience, making literature a powerful tool for language acquisition and literacy development.
