LUNG MORPHOLOGY: FUNCTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE OF MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC STRUCTURES

The lungs are the primary organs of the respiratory system and play an indispensable role in maintaining life through efficient gas exchange between the atmosphere and the bloodstream. Their highly specialized macroscopic and microscopic organization ensures optimal respiratory function and adaptation to varying physiological demands. This article presents a comprehensive morphological and functional analysis of the lungs, emphasizing the relationship between anatomical structures and respiratory physiology. Particular attention is given to the segmental organization of the bronchial tree, the architecture of pulmonary alveoli, the ultrastructure of the alveolar-capillary membrane, and the pulmonary vascular system. The structural characteristics of type I and type II pneumocytes, the surfactant system, and the age-related morphological changes affecting pulmonary function are also discussed. The study is based on a morphological-functional approach through the analysis of contemporary anatomical, histological, and physiological literature. Understanding pulmonary morphology provides the scientific basis for interpreting respiratory physiology, diagnosing pulmonary disorders, and improving surgical and therapeutic strategies in modern clinical practice.
