This study aims to elucidate the political, social, and economic factors that influenced the formation of the samurai class and to explore its establishment. Focusing on the social changes from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period, it examines how samurai evolved from mere armed groups into entities responsible for maintaining order and defending territories. By analyzing the manor system, the rise of local clans, and the connection with Buddhist thought, the study clarifies the samurai’s cultural and political roles. The findings reveal that samurai were not just warriors but played a central role in shaping social structures and cultural development.
